GENERATION 11

67 Emily BURTENSHAW-COX m James Thomas MORTIMER 22 Aug 1850 Fremantle

James Thomas Mortimer was born circa 1825. He was convicted at the Central Criminal Courts in London on 21-9-1838, aged 14, for 'claiming goods by false pretences.' His record states that he was from Lewisham in the county of Kent. He was an errand boy, and that he could read and write.

James recorded his father's name as James thomas and said that his own name was John. The Newgate Prison Register suggests James Thomas may have come from Lambeth Parish.

James was sentenced to 7 years transportation. He arrived at Parkhurst on Isle of Wight on 6-3-1839, from the hulk "Euryalus" lying at Chatham. The offence occurred 21-8-1838 (from Public Records Office, London). Marked under conduct as 'inoffensive disposition'.

He left the U.K. on "Simon Taylor" on 28-4-1842, arriving in Fremantle on 20-8-1842. James was indentured for a 3 year term to e. Pace, as a butcher. In March 1845 he petitioned for release at Fremantle on grounds of good behaviour.

James married Emily Burtenshaw-Cox on 22-8-1850. He owned Fremantle town lots in 1851 and 1856.

In 1852 James and Emily sailed to England per "Dido" with Sophia and John Burtenshaw Cox, returning the same year (without the Cox's) Emily died of measles on 30-3-1861, aged 29 years. After the death of his mother, John was reared by his uncle Dick (Richard Burtenshaw Cox) and worked on whaling ships. He was reputedly a big, strong man who pulled a boat when the anchor came adrift. In 1872 he helped save a French ship from destruction in Gage Roads. He was sent to South Australia per "Emily Smith" on 26-12-1866 for his education until 13-8-1867.

James married Emma Postans 26-8-1879 and had 19 children. First born was George James on 20-6-1880. When his sons were old enough to take over his Market gardens, he joined John Forrest as a stockman. John died 17-5-1934 at 77 years of age. He gave land for the first school at Rockingham. Emma died 2-1-1953.

Note: They went to England on 23 May 1852, returning in October, on the ship "Dido".
