WILL OF OBED ALDRED 1787



In the name of God Amen. I, Obed ALDRED, of Lowestoft in the County of Suffolk, Merchant, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, praised be God, do make, publish and declare this to be my last will and testament in manner following: that is to say

I give and devise unto Triphena my wife for and during the rest of her natural life

All that my Messuage with the stable, outhouses and buildings, yards and hereditaments thereto belonging and situate and being in Lowestoft aforesaid in the social occupation of James ROSE and Thomas MANNING the younger,

and also my tenement and Blacksmith's shop with the buildings, grounds, hereditaments and appurtenances thereto belonging, being and situate in Lowstoff aforesaid and in the occupation of William OLLEY

and also those my four Messuages or tenements and stables situate and being in Lowestoft aforesaid in a street or lain, .... called the Swan Lain with the outhouses and buildings, ground and hereditaments to them or any of them or any of them belonging as the ....... in the several uses or occupations of William TAYLOR, Ann HUMMERSLEY, widow, John EVINSON, John BLYTHE and John AMIS or their undertenants

and also all those in my five tenements or dwelling houses with the buildings grounds or hereditaments belonging and which were heretofore the estate of Mary WINSTANLEY and are situate in Lowestoft aforesaid near or adjoining to the Messuage in my own occupation and now in the several occupations of Edward DINMORE, Dick NAVEN, William MUNDAY, Susanna STEVENSON and William HAMMOND

And also all that my Messuage or dwelling house late belonging to Samuel Smith situate and being in the South West of the said town of Lowestoft with the buildings, grounds and hereditaments and appurtenances thereto belonging in the occupation of Nathaniel STERRY

And also those my two tenements or dwelling houses situate and being in Lowestoff aforesaid in a street or lane then called the Blue Anchor Lane, one of which late belonged to Samuel ROGERS and is in the occupation of Thomas MORTISHEAD, and the other late belonging to Elizabeth WYTE and in the occupation of (blank) AYERS, widow

And also all those my Osli(?) Lands situated and being in Lowestoft aforesaid with the Brickfield thereon and on ..... part thereof built and erected and which I purchased of John DAY, John PEARCE, and all which are in singular occupation

And also all that my ffourth part of sundry messuages or hereditaments situate and being in Lowestoft aforesaid, together called or known by the name of the China Factory and are in the use, posession or occupation of myself and my copartners in the Porcelain Manufactory carried on there

And also all that my office of Fish Houses with the Edifice part of sand, and hereditaments, pits vats and appurtenances thereto belonging situate lying in and being in Lowestoft aforesaid late the estate of Thomas Barlow JERRARD and in the occupation of myself and tenants,

And from and after the decease of my said wife I give and devise all and sundry all the messuages, tenements, Lands grounds ..... and premises hereinbefore mentioned and ..... every part thereof with all their appurtenances unto my Grandson, Samuel Higham ALDRED, the eldest son of my son Samuel Dixon ALDRED for the use and .... of my said Grandson for ever

Also I give and bequeath to my said wife and her heirs and assigns for ever all that my Messuage or tenement with the buildings, grounds and appurtanences thereto belonging situate in Lowestoft aforesaid known as or called the Blue Anchor Lane in the occupation of Bartholomew ALERTON.

Also I give and devise to my said wife Triphena for and during the rest of her natural life all that my Messuage or tenement and with the buildings lands and grounds and hereditaments thereto belonging or occupied therewith situate lying and being in the said County of Suffolk and in Lowestoft aforesaid in the occupation of Robert BARNEBY his assigns or undertenants

And from and after my said wife's decease I authorise, direct order and empower Robert BROWNE of Lowestoft aforesaid about whom I have hereinafter appointed to be an executor of this my will, his executors or administrators to sell, make sale and dispose of the said last mentioned messuage or tenement, grounds and tenements and with the appurtenances for the best price and most money that he or they can resonably get or obtain for the same and to pay and apply the moneys arising from such sale to and for the purposes hereinafter mentioned and directed

And my mind and will is that the purchaser or purchasers of my said messuages, hereditaments and premises or any of them shall not be answerable or accountable for the purchase money given therefore, but that the receipt or receipts of the person or persons hereby empowered to sell the same shall be a sufficient discharge to such purchase or purchases for which such receipt or receipts shall be given

but if my personal estate hereinafter charged with the five several sums of fifty pounds and of two hundred pounds shall prove sufficient for those purposes and for the other purposes of this will without having recourse to a sale of the last mentioned messuage lands and hereditaments in and thereof, then in such a case I give and devise the same messuage, lands tenements and premises with the apputanences to my said Grandson Samuel Higham ALDRED and to his heirs for ever

But my will and mind is that the ...ity of such sale for the purposes mentioned in this my will so far forth as the title of a purchaser or purchasers .... have of buying the same as aforesaid recorded (?) shall not be agitated or called into question so as in any wise to effect or impeach the purchaser or purchasers in or to the same.

Also I give and devise to Triphena BOSTON my daughter for and during the term of her natural life all that my messuage or tenement with the buildings, lands grounds and hereditaments belonging, situate and being in Lowestoft aforesaid in the High Street there and now or late in the occupation of Matthew BOSTON my son in law, and from and after my said daughter's decease I give and devise th said last mentioned messuage and premises to all such lawful children of my said daughter as she shall have living at the time of her decease and their several respective heirs and assigns for ever to hold as tenants in common and not as joint tenants, and if there should be only one child alive, to such only child and its heirs forever, but in case my said daughter shall die without leaving any lawful issue, then from and after her decease I give and devise all the said last mentioned messuage hereditaments and premises to my said grandson, Samuel Higham ALDRED

And also I give and bequaeth to my to my said wife Triphena all my household goods, furniture, plate and linen to and for her own .... and proper use

Also I give and bequeath to my said wife for her own proper use and benefit the sum of two hundred pounds of lawful money of Great Britain

Also I desire my executors to sell and convert into money all my fishing boats nets with their trawl materials and appurtanences, herring nets, Billett and salt barrels ..... fferry boats and all other my stock in trade, herrings and effects in the Herring Business and to apply the moneys arising for the purposes hereafter mentioned

Also I give and bequeath to my said wife and to the aforesaid Robert Browne, the executrix and Executor of this my will all and every my part share and ...... in the China or Porcelain Manufactory carried on at Lowestoft together with my part or share in the S...hold Watermill at Gunton in the said county of Suffolk with its appurtanences and all my share of the stock in trade, outstanding debts and all and every other Right and interest in the said business, and also all my sundry money debts and securities for money arising by or from the sale of my said fishing boats, nets, ropes, billet salt barrels, ..vils, ferry boats and the fishing stock hereinbefore directed to be sold, also all and singular ..... my personal effects, goods and chattels whatsoever and wheresoever and not hereinbefore otherwise given or disposed of ... trust for paying out all my just debts, ffuneral and testementary expenses and the said legacy of two hundred pounds to my said wife co.... during the natural (life) of my said wife and all or part thereof as she shall please

The said porcelain manufactory and employ so much of my said personalty as shall be needful and necessary for that purpose, at the risk and hazard of the persons entitled by this will to the personal money after my said wife's decease, and all the profit and income chance to arise, I give to my said wife for her own use and as to such parts of my said personalty as shall not be wanted for carrying on such Business, and also the moneys arising from the sale of my share and interest in the said manufactory and watermill, if the same shall be sold with my ...... in her life, then I desire shall be put out by my said trustees at interest or such security or otherwise as they shall approve of during the natural life of my said wife, but at the hazard of the persons entitled to the principle by this my will, and all such interest arising to my said wife for her own use for and during the term of her natural life

And from and after her decease, then as to the said principal money arising aforesaid and also my share and interest in the said porcelain manufactory and watermill, which, if not sold in my said wife's lifetime, I desire may be sold an converted into money immediately after her decease

And also as to the moneys to arise from the sale of my said messuages, lands, hereditaments and premises in Kirkley and Lowestoft aforesaid having before ...rted to be sold, and also as to the rents and profits thereof from my said wife's decease till sold, I give and dispose thereof in manner following:

That is to say I give and bequath ffifty pounds, part of such moneys, to my granddaughter Mary ALDRED and ffifty pounds further part thereof to my granddaughter Triphena ALDRED, ffifty pounds further part thereof to my granddaughter Sarah ALDRED and ffifty pounds further part thereof to my grandson John ALDRED, and ffifty pounds further part thereof to my grandson Joshua ALDRED, and ffifty pounds further part thereof to my grandson Samuel Dixon ALDRED to be paid to the said legatees repectively when and as they shall severally attain the age of twenty one years

And as to for and concerning six hundred pounds further, part of such moneys, I desire the said Robert BROWNE, his executors and administrators to put and place out at interest during the natural life of the said Triphena Boston, my daughter, either on Government security or securities as the said Robert BROWNE his executors or administrators, but at the risk and hazard of the person or persons entitled thereto by this my will, and all the interest and proceeds thereof I give to my said daughter during her life to be paid into her own proper hands, notwithstanding her present or any future coverture, whose receipts and discharge from the same notwithstanding such coverture I willl shall from time to time be sufficient discharge therefore, and after the decease of my said daughter, I give the said principal sum of six hundred pounds to be equally divided to and among all the children (if more than one) of my said daughter who shall be then living and to new issue such of them as shall be then dead or with issue to take any .... part or ....which his or her or their father or Mother would have been entitled to having

And if my said daughter should die without leaving any such issue, then I give the said principal sum of six hundred pounds after her decease to my said three grandsons Samuel Higham ALDRED, John Obed ALDRED and Joshua ALDRED and to my said three grand daughters Mary ALDRED, Triphena ALDRED and Sarah ALDRED to be equally divided between them share and share alike and to be paid at their respective ages of twenty one years

And as to all the rest, residue and remainder of the said moneys arising from the several ways or means ......... invested, and after deducting the said several sums of ffifty pounds and the said sum of six hundred pounds for the several purposes aforesaid I give and bequeath the same and every part thereof to my said grandson Samuel Higham ALDRED

And I nominate, constitute and appoint my said wife to be executrix and the said Robert BROWNE to be executor of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other by me at any time heretofor made

In witness whereof I have to this my last will and testament contained in ffive sheets of paper and affixed together at the tops, the first, second, third and fourth sheets set my hand and to this fifth sheet thereof set my hand and seal this eighteenth day of January in the year of Our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty seven.
