Report of memorial service for Martha Broad
from the Otago Witness
The Women's Christian Temperance Union held a memorial service yesterday in the Hanover Street Baptist Sunday School. The President (Mrs Hiett) occupied the chair. The reading desk was draped with the Union Banner and white winter roses and heliotrope heather and anemones, tied with a large white bow and streamer.
Mrs Don (Dominion president) read proverbs 30 and 10 "The virtues of a good woman" She selected this scripture because it so aptly described their late comrade and sister Mrs A C Broad, who was loved by everyone with whom she came into contact for her patience, beauty of charachter and generosity.
She was one of the six original members who joined up with Mrs Nevett, who visited New Zealand nearly 40 years ago. Nevett House was named after the founder of the Women's Christian Temperance Union.
Mrs Broad was also one of the foremost workers in the women's franchise movement.
Mrs Powell and Mrs Hislop also spoke in eulogistic terms of their late sister and comrade. The following resolution was carried: "That the Women's Christian Temperance Union desire to place on record their deep sorrow at the loss they have sustained through the passing of Mrs A C Broad, their sister so recently promoted to higher service. She devoted herself not only to God and home and humanity, but was a valued worker and friend to all who knew her. The family has the Union's sympathy and prayer that the God of all consolation may himself comfort them"
The members stood in silence while the letter was read. Mrs Edmonds sang "Rest in the Lord" and the meeting closed with the hymn "For all the Saints".
