Research on Charles Whatling

Carried out by Harold Pond

(Henry) Charles Whatling - Son of John & Naomi Whatling, born 1855, and baptised 20th May 1855, as Henry but later known as Charles.

Charles was recorded in St Michael in 1871 at the family home aged 16 but in 1881 he was recorded as aged 26, a molecatcher domestic, and widower, with a son William aged 4 who was shown as being born in America. William was shown in 1891 as 14 a farmer's boy born Canada Toronto.

Charles Whatling and Sarah Gracey

Investigations showed that Charles travelled to Canada sometime between 1871 and 1874, and married Sarah Gracey in 1874. The couple had one child John William (later just known as William) born 13th September 1876 and Charles returned to England with his new family, Sarah dying later, probably in 1879. By 1901 William has moved to Yorkshire, England, and is recorded at Templenewsam, Halton, living with a family named Verity.

Checking the Canada marriages around that time it was found that a Charles Watlin was recorded as marrying a Sarah Gracey in York, York County, Ontario, on 27th November 1874. York is adjacent to Toronto. Charles Watlin was recorded as aged 20, born England, son of John and Naomi. Sarah was shown as 21, born Ireland, daughter of Daniel and Ann Gracey.

In the South Elmham register transcripts is a burial, 25th February 1879, of a Mary Ann Whatling aged 26. Could this be the first wife? As no corresponding death registration was found in Wangford it may be that the name or age at death was incorrectly recorded or incorrectly transcribed. However there is a death registered in Wangford District in the 1st quarter of 1879 of a Sarah Whatling birth date about 1853. Is this the first wife? Are Mary Ann and Sarah the same person?
